There are many factors in purchasing a washer and dryer unit or set. Here are a couple of key decisions to make regarding your washer and dryer models:
- For your washer, do you want front loading or top loading? Front load washers generally use less water, detergent, and electricity, and often have an attractive contemporary and
stylish appearance. Top load washers don't require nearly as much bending over to use and are a more traditional choice.
- For your dryer, do you want a gas or electric model? This will depend to some degree on the power available in your home and in your laundry area. Gas dryers often have lower
fuel running costs but cost more to purchase up front. Most agree that if you have an existing gas hook-up, a gas dryer will save money and
be a more efficient choice in the long run.
Be sure to consider location and installation when purchasing your washer and dryer set.
- Measure your space. Before buying any unit, take careful measurements of your space,
keeping in mind door opening clearance and wall clearance, as well as overall dimensions. Review product specifications to make sure that your space will
work for the appliances you are considering.
- Consider installation issues. Check to see if you have a 240 volt outlet, an existing dryer duct/vent to outside, a gas connection,
and anything else that could affect your purchasing decision and your installation. Be sure that your choice will work with your power source options and
consider getting installation estimates before your final purchase.

STACKABLE AND ONE PIECE WASHER AND DRYER SHOPPING TIPS
Stackable and one piece washers and dryers are great space saving options,
and the latest models offer top performance. Compact washers and dryers are ideal for tight spots, and are workable for one person, a
couple, or even a family. Equipped with the terminology and tips in this guide, you'll be ready to buy your perfect unit or set in no time.
One Piece Washers Dryers
Also called laundry centers, this is probably what most people picture when they think of a washer and dryer set. The washer and dryer are attached as a single unit,
with the dryer above the washer. The dryer is always front loading for accessibility. Top or front loading washers are available, depending on your personal preference.
Controls for both units are designed to be reachable and easy to see, with their location typically at eye level. Electric only models as well as electric washer and
gas dryer options (more common in larger sizes) are available.
Some one piece units offer the capacity and special features of separate washers and dryers. However, it is common for one piece units to have fewer features and
accommodate smaller load sizes than many upscale individual models.
These appliances save space, particularly floor space, and fit well in closets or other compact locations. They need venting like most dryers, and typically require
a 240 volt power supply (even if the dryer portion runs on gas, the washer will require electricity.)
These should typically be installed by a qualified professional and/or a plumber.
Stacked Washer Dryers
The term stacked washer and dryer often is used to refer to a one piece unit (see above.) However, a stacked washer and dryer set also refers to separate washers and dryers
that are stacked with the dryer resting on top of the washer. In this formation, you will need to choose a front load washer
with front controls and a flat top,
as well as a front load dryer. They should be designed for use in stacked formation; check the manufacturer’s specifications. When choosing this option, be sure
that your dryer controls will be reachable; you'll find that in this set-up, some dryer controls can end up six feet high and a bit of a stretch.
This option can be desirable if you need to save floor space, but don't want to pass on any particular special features for either
your washer
or dryer.
You'll typically have more choices in picking exactly what you want for each unit than with an all-in-one laundry center.
These should typically be installed by a qualified professional and/or a plumber.
Combination Washers and Dryers/All-in-One Wash and Dry Machines
All-in-one washers and dryers clean and dry items using the same tub. This is the top option for drastic space saving needs, though you will give up some
convenience and performance. They can take hours to wash and dry one load, and generally can only dry half the amount that they can wash at one time.
However, in addition to taking up as little as half the space of any other washer and dryer option, they usually don't need to be vented and can use a
standard 120 volt outlet, limiting installation issues and making this a top apartment washer choice. You will still need a drainage option, such as a nearby sink.
If you are in a small space, this may be the best washer and dryer style for you.
There are many features available. Be careful not to pay extra for features you won't actually use. Consider the following:
Washer and Dryer Features
The following features and considerations apply to both washers and dryers:
Energy Star: This government program rates the energy efficiency of appliances. Choosing Energy Star qualified washer machines or
washer/dryers combos will save you money on power and also help conserve natural resources.
Controls: You'll generally have a choice of knobs or digital touch pad controls. This is mostly a matter of personal preference. Make sure that controls are easy to reach and use.
Tub Material: A stainless steel tub is the top choice, since it won't rust and is extremely durable.
Tub Size/Capacity: A larger tub, when operated at full capacity, is more energy efficient than a smaller one because you will be able to do one load instead of many.
Cycle Time: Efficiency is important, and a shorter cycle length will save you time and conserve energy.
Quite Operation: Look for models that offer quiet operation, especially if your washer and dryer are near your main living areas.
Warranty: Reputable brands will offer warranties, with one year being typical. GE appliances and Maytag appliances are top brands, with
a GE washer and dryer,
Maytag washers and dryers,
or Bosch washing machines
and dryers all reputable products.
Washer Extras
These features are specific to washing machines:
Wash/Rinse/Temperature Controls: Choices such as delicate, cottons, heavy soil, extra rinse, soak, and more are available. Consider your priorities. There’s nothing wrong with basic if it will meet your long term needs.
Other Options: Automatic wash level sensor, antibacterial cycles, programmable cycles, and more are included on some upscale models.
Dryer Extras
Consider the following when evaluating dryers:
Cycle/Temperature Options: Some options, such as gentle, cottons, and anti-wrinkle are often helpful, while others may be rarely used by some people. Consider your specific needs.
Moisture Sensor: A popular and common feature, this sensor will detect when clothes are dry and the dryer will shut off automatically, reducing possible clothes shrinkage as well as saving energy.
Drying Rack: This is a top feature if you plan to dry items like sneakers, or even delicate items like sweaters or certain fabrics that should not be tumbled.
